100 things to know before you travel in Japan
Thank you for visiting our web site. We are writing this book to help travelers to travel smart in Japan. Please excuse us for not having completed writing all yet. (Lasted Update: Feb 24, 2008)
Can Drinks
There are variety of drinkings in cans in Japan: Soda including Coke, Sprite, Fanta etc which are common in the Western countries. Canned coffee is unique and taste great, you should try it! Pocali sweat, corn soup, a variety of teas (green, woolon, English) in both cold and hot. Fruit juice are also popular in either vending machines or stores.
Capsule Hotels
There are so called capsule hotels in big cities. The guests sleep in a small box, whose size is about 1~2 sq-meter. There is no door to close the box for security reason, but just a curtain is used to secure your privacy. They have lockers to keep your lagguages outside of your sleeping box. The price varies by cities but it's usually 1500~3000yen per night. You may want to try it but I personally wouldn't recommend travellers staying there.
Cherry Blossoms
Early April is the best season to visit Japan to see Sakura (Cherry Blossoms). Ueno park is one of the famous place for Sakura blooming in Tokyo. At night, lots of groups have parties under Sakura trees for eating, drinking, talking, and singing. It's called "Hanami (flower viewing)". Be careful for drunken people.
Chopsticks
If you are too worried about how to use chopsticks, don't worry. Most of restaurants have fork and spoon.
Clothes to Wear
The weather is comparable to the eastern coast of North America. Tokyo is about equivalent to Washington DC. In the summer, it will be humid. You will feel better if you dress modestly. Not many Japanese wear sunglasses, as they think it makes the other person feel a bit nervous. This is useful imformation: http://www.weather.com/
